A Checklist for Getting Book Printing Bids

Your checklist should contain the following:

  • Title of your book
  • Quantity you want printed (Note: you can ask for more than one quantity)
  • Trim size (Note: book printers may specialize in certain sizes and offer economical prices when printing a size suited for their presses)
  • Page count (Note: most printers specialize in 32-page signatures)
  • Interior pages specifications:
    • How will you supply the artwork? (On disk or hard copy? Computer files must meet printer’s specifications — ask printer for Electronic Information Form)
    • Will your interior pages bleed? (Printing graphics up to the edge of the page)
    • Number and color of ink (B&W is most common and most economical)
    • Stock - Paper brand/name, texture, color, weight. (Note: papers vary on thickness, color, opacity, stiffness, bulk — request samples)
    • Proofs (Do you want bluelines or B&W laser print proofs)

  • Cover specifications:
    • How will you supply the artwork? (On disk or hard copy? Computer files must meet printer’s specifications — ask printer for Electronic Information Form)
    • Colors (PMS spot colors or 4-color process)
    • Stock (Note: soft cover is usually 10 pt. C1S — 10 pt. weight is similar to a postcard, and C1S is "Coated One Side"— shiny on the outside only)
    • Proofs (You should order a color match print or digital color proof)
    • Type of lamination

    • Binding - Soft cover (perfect binding) or hard cover (case binding)
    • Packing (Bulk pack in cartons and/or shrink wrap)
